August 28, 2000 - DHP was named "STRIKE HERO OF THE WEEK" for the week of August 11 by SAG.

Strike Hero of the Week is a new feature highlighting a member who has made a significant contribution to the SAG commercials strike effort.

August 11 - Hero of the Week David Hyde Pierce

David Hyde Pierce has been active on picket lines since the strike began. His views on the stalled negotiations were printed in this month's AFL-CIO magazine "America @ Work"

David Hyde Pierce, co-star of the television sit-com "Frasier," has been an active participant in the strike by Screen Actors and Television and Radio Artists against the advertising industry. Pierce wrote the following for America @ Work What's angerig actors in the SAG/AFTRA commercials strike is the sense that management wants to have it both ways. On the one hand, advertisers came to the bargaining table crying poverty--asking for rollbacks in the network payments, minimal increases in cable residuals and refusing to negotiate Internet commercials. "On the other hand, Advertising Age reports 'upfront' network ad sales will rise 10 percent to 15 percent above the $7 billion achieved last year; cable sales will rise 31 percent, to $5 billion; cash-barter sales from syndication may reach $6 billion. "The New York Times quotes the president of the American Association of Advertising Agencies as saying, 'Business has never been better. It's as good a year as I can remember.' "It has not been a good year for the rank-and-file SAG/AFTRA members who depend on their commercial income to get by. Their performances helped make those enormous corporate profits possible, and although these actors can't afford to be out of work, the strike is the only way they have to tell management, 'You can't have it both ways.'" For more information, visit www.aftra.org and www.sag.org.

Over $100,000 was raised to buy newspaper space to get their word out to the public that watches their commercials. -- Army Archerd, Daily Variety Senior Columnist

Elsewhere on the fashion scene, the " Jennifer Lopez effect" was full-blown, judging by many "what's holding that up?" dresses worn by nominees and presenters. "Duct tape," explained "Frasier" co-star Jane Leeves of the thin green ribbon strategically draped over her, er, assets. "And velcro, and it's even stapled to me in places." March 5, 2000 - Congratulations go out to DHP and Eddie of "Frasier " DHP won the 2nd Annual TV Guide Award for Favorite Actor - Comedy and Eddie won Favorite TV Pet. The ceremony aired live on FOX.

Unlike other award shows, many of which are handed out by industry academies, press groups, or critics, TV Guide trophies go to audience favorites, and winning one is considered a good measure of TV viewer interest. TV Guide readers can stray from stodgy academies... however, they can also be very much in tune with critics, and that happened in the voting for favorite comedic actor, won by David Hyde Pierce of "Frasier." Pierce has won numerous other honors including an Emmy, but says he never tires of being acknowledged. "I have a lot of them and I don't mind," he told reporters backstage as he gripped his new gold statuette topped by the TV Guide logo. "We've been on the air so long it's great people still like it." - Bob Tourtellotte (Reuters)
